As a successful businesswoman, what do you think of the status of women today?

Is the way fashion is viewed in America distinct than Europe or Asia?

In America fashion designer handbags is based on reality. Individuals truly wear clothes. I think French or Japanese fashion might be a good deal additional intellectual but in a tortured way.

People are curious here and willing to try points out. In some cases in Europe they wait for someone else to tell them it is cool.

Do you feel like you had far more opportunity in America to spread your wings than elsewhere?

The factor about America is that there’s this sense of possibility — that for those who work difficult sufficient you will get to achieve a minimum of some component of your dream. Individuals are really open here, they allow you to have a go at something which does not often occur in Europe. Europe can be a museum culture; it is possible to look but do not touch.

How would you describe your clothes in 1 word?

Irreverent. I love intellectual fashion and art, but there’s a point where it has to be fun and playful. I attempt to do some thing contemporary and express joy through it. Color and print have turn into a massive part of my creative procedure. From time to time I will have a look at a design and say, “that’s borderline kitsch but also cool at the exact same time.” Individuals normally believe I’m so severe, but there’s a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor in my clothes.

What’s your greatest pet peeve?

One factor I miss about Europe is that you are allowed to age gracefully. In America everyone looks like a film star. It’s not effortless acquiring older in particular within the fashion enterprise for the reason that you’re surrounded by youth all the time.

How do you deal with that?

I’m old sufficient that I recognize, certain my body’s changing but those are the things you torture your self about when you are 21-years-old. There’s a point when you have to adore yourself.

Do you use the identical realistic mentality toward body image once you cast models?

Half of the girls who are super skinny have no personality. They have no hips and no bodies because they’re only 15! Normal women do not look like that along with the image pushed by media just isn’t healthy.

For me it’s about energy, self-possession and presence not age. They’ve to look like they really wear the clothes and have a personality. Some designers like to have uniform look all through the show, but we like girls to have their own look not a cookie-cutter image. It is much more intriguing to have them look genuine, like themselves.

We try to cast older models and mothers. But a lot of the older females don’t desire to do shows since they’ve to do fittings and castings with 15-year-olds. It’s a bit degrading.

You appear so strong and resilient; does anything make you feel insecure?

I’m rather sensitive to people’s moods so if there is anything wrong within the family I’m incredibly anxious. I hate going to huge fashion events on my own. I’m just as weak as the next person but I’ve learned ways to navigate life in my way. Nobody is superman and you find out to accept your weaknesses.

You have a brand new swimwear line, shoes, bags, as well as a menswear line, what’s next for Zero+ Maria Cornejo?

I’d adore to do a perfume. I feel sense of smell is key. I’d love to do much more retail simply because I think it is the only location you’ll be able to show the collection how you would like it to be observed.

For me, success is to be consistently studying. I need to pay my bills, be sure my kids feel loved and uncover some thing they love to do and feel continually inspired. There’s an excellent comfort in not generally fitting in. You do not know what the rules are so you make your own version of points.

When I was thinking of the spring/summer collection I realized that the idea of cultural displacement is rather relevant mainly because I have lived in South America and I saw the Indians and their look. Then I went to England and everybody was blond and blue-eyed, and needless to say in Japan there was a totally unique feeling. My inspiration is all about the mixture of cultures and traveling.

It’s not often that city officials cheer when revenues fall, but the money being made from the District’s disposable bag fee is dropping, and that’s just what they wanted.

It means more people have gotten the message and are bringing reusable bags with them when they shop. That keeps those awful plastic sacks out of the landfills and waterways.

The Washington Examiner reported that revenue from the bag fee dropped some 50 percent  between January and August of this year, bringing in $1.5 million as opposed to the $4 million that was expected.

The fee went into effect in January, and retailers said the use of reusable bags increased substantially from the start. Residents used to use about 22.5 million bags per month. When the fee went into effect,  that number dropped to about  three million.

Money raised from the fee funds cleanup projects for the Anacostia and Potomac rivers.

Heavy bags no laughing matter for Lapid

September 28th, 2010 admin No comments

MANILA, Philippines—Stung by Education Secretary Armin Luistro’s swift rejection of his bill that would stop the overloading of schoolbags, Sen. Lito Lapid went nostalgic about his humble origins to defend his bill.

“If only I did not go through such hard labor in the mountain—I was a wood gatherer and I carried sugar cane when I was young—I should have been taller because the Lapids are very big. I should have been taller than my father who was 5 (feet) 11 (inches),” said the 5’9” Lapid.

“This is from my own experience. Because I carried heavy wood and sugar cane, I became smaller as it probably had an effect on my spinal column. I don’t want other kids to suffer the same with the heavy bags they are forced to carry to school. They still have very young bones, do you want them to get a bent spinal column?”

In his bill, Lapid proposed that schools limit the maximum load of schoolbags to 15 percent of a student’s body weight. Schools should provide weighing scales to implement this regulation. He also proposed that schools provide more lockers and buy thinner and lighter textbooks.

The former movie actor cited a study purportedly showing that a growing number of pupils had developed back deformities from carrying heavy backpacks in school.

Too many laws

Luistro told reporters earlier that he found Lapid’s Senate Bill No. 2179 too trivial to require enactment into law.

Luistro said the problem of overloading schoolbags could easily be addressed by the school principal and the parents themselves.

Southwest-AirTran: Are Free Bags an Endangered Species?

How much are those bags costing you?

How much are those bags costing you?

Southwest promotes its airline with its “Bags Fly Free” pledge, in contrast to the $20 or more slapped on for a checked suitcase on many flights – a surcharge that rang up $2.7 billion for the airlines last year.

“I think it’s inevitable” that Southwest will eventually start charging for bags, said Raymond Neidl, a longtime airline and aerospace analyst now with investment firm Maxim Group.

He said it’s harder to maintain free bags as airlines like Southwest expand to offer more connecting flights and international service, which can increase bag-handling costs.

Southwest said today that it plans to keep its free bags policy, which the company claims is a prime point of difference from its competitors. In fact, the airline boasts the free-bags policies have helped it boost revenue by as much as $800 million a year from market-share gains. Southwest posted nearly $10.4 billion in total operating revenue for 2009.

“At this point in time we are not assuming that we will be open to assigning seats, charging for bags, having dual class service, anything along those lines,” Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said on a conference call Monday.

But it is a temptation worthy of the Garden of Eden. In 2009, airlines collected $2.7 billion in baggage fees, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. AirTran’s share of the fees bonanza was $146 million.

Ancillary fees, a category that includes bag fees, charges to change plane reservations, fees to fly standby and other extras, were 6.6% of the industry’s total operating revenue in 2009, the BTS said, and 10.7% of AirTran’s total operating revenue.

Don’t tear your hair out yet, fee haters.

“I think it’s gone from something they’ve tested to something they’re committed to,” Forrester travel-industry analyst Henry Harteveldt said of Southwest’s free bags policy. “Nothing lasts forever, of course, but I don’t see Southwest wavering near term on this.”

The company has received the contract from Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) under the Ministry of Health, Thailand, for supplying Docetaxel for one year as per the Thai government’s strategy of providing quality product at an affordable prices, Venus Remedies said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

“The contract is valid for one year and is expected to generate a business of more than Rs 10 crore to the company,” it said.

Total pharma market in Thailand is about $2.9 billion. Venus already has 10 product registrations in Thailand for oncology and anti-infective segments.

The Indian firm has bagged the contract through the compulsory license scheme by the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO). The GPO after importing the drug will make it available to the poor, who cannot afford high cost patented drugs.

Pharma major Sanofi-Aventis holds the patent for Docetaxel and markets it under the brand name of Taxotere and its patent of the product Docetaxel is still valid in Thailand.

Besides, the company has tied up with a local drug firm for distribution of the product in Thailand.

“We have a tie up with a local pharmaceutical group for marketing and distribution of the product to the entire Thai market. The supply will begin by November this year,” it added.

Docetaxel is used mainly for the treatment of breast, ovarian, and widely prevalent in non-small cell lung cancer.

Premature Brit baby survives after being kept warm in bubble wrap bag

September 28th, 2010 admin No comments

A premature British baby who was on the verge of dying survived after being kept warm in a bubble wrap bag.

Lexi Lacey weighed just 14oz when she was born at 26 weeks. The average weight of a full-term child, born after 37 weeks, is 7lb 6oz.

Parents Chelsea Rowberry, 17, and Lee Lacey, 24, from Worcester were warned by medics that it was unlikely Lexi would survive.

Lexi-Marie Lacey was kept warm in her first hours in a plastic bag shrouded in bubble wrap.

But the youngster battled against all the odds and pulled through. She is now a happy, healthy 11-week-old baby – but still only weighs 5lb 6oz.

Chelsea said people were stunned that Lexi had survived.

‘When they see her now people don’t believe me when I tell them how premature she was,’ the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

When they got to the hospital, Chelsea was told that she was already 3cm dilated and she gave birth to 14oz Lexi.

After the umbilical cord was removed Lexi was popped straight into the plastic bag.

Dr Andrew Gallagher, consultant paediatrician at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, said: ‘When very small babies are born, to keep them warm they are placed in a plastic bag for about 30 minutes.

‘We pop them in feet first and their head sticks out the top of the bag so that the water can’t evaporate off them very easily. It acts as a little micro-environment for them to be in before they are later transferred to the neonatal unit and placed in an incubator and the bag is removed.

‘The bags come from NHS supplies and are on a roll. They are open at the top, see through and about the same size as a sandwich bag but without the sealant at the top,’ Gallagher added.
