When you’re the reigning 2A champs and won eight consecutive titles from 1993 through 2000, expectations never take a season off. So Valley Christian (20-14, 4-2) is attempting to go undefeated in the final week of regular season play in preparation for the postseason.

“The pressure’s all there, all there,” said senior outside hitter Stacey Jones. “I have the highest expectations for this team. We have the potential and if we all work together and work hard for the rest of the season, we can go far. So I’m just hoping everyone else has the same confidence.”

For first-year varsity coach Kayla Cornwell, this team is about unity and not just one player. She inherited seven returning players, but only about three or four had quality playing experience. Still, everyone is contributing.

“We’ve played better as a team,” Cornwell said. “We don’t just go to one player. We kind of spread it around.”

And the key to that is communication. Lorbeck, who at libero has manned the back of the court, has been the leader there, telling her teammates what she sees.

“When we’re talking and communicating, we can be such a strong team,” Cornwell continued. “But when we’re not, though, we’re a weak team. They know that. We talk about that a lot lately.”

Most importantly, the team recognizes it takes everyone to produce for success. While Jones has led the team with 288 kills, sophomore Lindy Dyer has a team-high 59 aces. And Lorbeck has 260 digs, only second to Dyer’s 337.

“Last year, we had just a lot of college, elite talent,” Lorbeck said. “So it was natural that we didn’t have to work at a lot of stuff. This year I think there’s a lot more heart, dedication and people are really trying to give it their all every day in practice and every match.

“It’s more like you have to earn what we get instead of given to us.”

And even though this program is accustomed to winning easily, the players aren’t immune to a little hard work – especially when their next game is against rival Phoenix Northwest Christian.
