Good vibes return to Milan runway

October 4th, 2010 admin No comments

RETAILERS are thrilled, reporters are raving and designers are breathing a sigh of relief.

“Hey, Milan is back on track again,” said Dan Katen of Dsquared2 after it took him more than half an hour in traffic to get to a benefit event last Monday, the closing day of the womenswear fashion week for spring/summer 2011.

After several grouchy seasons, when, feeling the effect of the economic crisis, designers seemed devoid of ideas and the fashion pack lost its love of Milan – “too dull and too expensive” went the refrain – the good vibes have returned.

Everybody liked the new schedule – top-billed shows spread out over six days – and the new venues – fancy downtown “palazzi” rather than the sterile fair grounds.

Figures released by the Italian Fashion Chamber at the end of the week showed that Milan Fashion Week is alive and well. Fifteen thousand buyers from 40 countries attended the event, which included 178 collections, 78 shows and more than 100 presentations. The many fashionistas walking about town with big name shopping bags confirmed the upward move.

“Fashion is renewal, and it was time for us to renew ourselves,” said Beppe Modenese, founder of the Milan fashion event more than 30 years ago. Above all else, the upbeat mood was reflected in the ultra-colourful, cheerful styles, which drew inspiration from the fashion heydays of the 1970s.

Paris Haute Couture Week: Chanel

Paris Haute Couture Week: Chanel

Paris Haute Couture Week: Chanel

Most people who follow fashion know the Chanel signatures very well: black, ivory, bouclé, suits, camellias, black, ivory. Rinse, repeat. Karl Lagerfeld’s Spring 2010 haute couture collection of graphic white and silver was a significant departure from the Chanel aesthetic that we have all come to expect, and his Chanel Fall/Winter 2010 Haute Couture collection is yet another giant step into new territory.

The most startling things about this collection were the surprising choices in color and proportion. Normally Chanel’s color palette is very predictable, but these clothes were rendered in the very un-Chanel shades of maroon, gold, navy and brown. Proportion was primarily at play in the collection’s suits and coats – abbreviated jackets were paired with below-the-knee flared skirts, coats were often boxy and straight or puffed to comical proportions. As always with Chanel couture, the real fireworks started after the show’s halfway point, where somewhat odd suits and jackets gave way to beading and embroidery so intricate and masterful that an in-person viewing would surely be required in order to appreciate the skill of the work in full. In the end, this collection should be counted as a bold achievement on the part of Lagerfeld and his team even if the suits and coats looked to hold it back at times.

Alabama dog abuser denied parole

MONTGOMERY, Ala – Louis Vuitton bears permanent scars from the hideous abuse he suffered at the hands of 23-year-old Juan Daniels of Montgomery, AL. Much to the relief of the abused dog’s many supporters, Juan Daniels was denied parole at a hearing Tuesday.

The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously voted to deny Juan Daniels parole and he does not become eligible again until July 2012. Daniel’s supporters feel that he is being treated to harshly for his crime.

Ask most anyone that knows Louis Vuitton’s painful story and they will strongly disagree. Louis Vuitton was doused with lighter fluid, lit on fire, and beaten with a shovel in September 2007. According to Holladay Simmons, the veterinarian that initially treated Louis, the injuries were the worst that she had ever treated.

Daniel’s reason for the horrendous abuse? He was mad at his mother because she would not let him use the car. Louis, at that time, belonged to his mother.

Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks requested that the Parole Board deny Daniels an early release in light of his extreme cruelty to Louis, in addition to nine disciplinary actions taken against him during his time in prison. “The first reason to deny parole is to prevent him from hurting another animal or a person,” Brooks said.

Louis himself made an appearance in the court room on Tuesday. The now 8 yr-old Pit Bull greeted his many fans with a wagging tail and happy tongue. His demeanor seeming none the worse for wear, despite the torture that he endured, and survived.

Louis had many supporters in the hearing room – more than 60 individuals came to ensure that Louis’ crimes would not go unpunished. Law Enforcement, animal advocates, and other fans of the abused dog stood by as the Parole Board delivered their vote.

Juan Daniels is serving a record nine years and six months in prison – an unprecedented sentence in Alabama on an animal cruelty case. Thankfully, Daniels was not slapped with a misdemeanor and released as the public frequently witnesses in many animal abuse cases.

It’s refreshing to see the courts take the heinous actions of an animal abuser seriously. Individuals capable of treating another living being in this manner are a danger to society as a whole and their actions must be punished.

Tracking these individuals and making their crimes known to the public is the next critical step in preventing them from re-offending.

Louis Vuitton celebrates the opening of new beachside boutique

The excitement surrounding Santa Monica Place mall was palpable Thursday night as a gaggle of glamorous guests filed into the newly opened Louis Vuitton boutique to celebrate the brand’s first Westside location. Many people showed their love for the brand by wearing some of Louis Vuitton’s most Serenacharles statement-making pieces. Cameron Silver arrived in a marigold blazer and matching shorts, a yellow- and gray-striped scarf, two-tone sneakers and gold sunglasses all by LV. And one woman accessorized her black cocktail dress with sequin Louis Vuitton pumps from the winter 2010 collection, a couple layers of fleur and crown pendants, while toting a purple sequin Rococo pouch from the evening bag line.
It was a true celebration of the house and the highly anticipated 3,200-square-foot beachside location which carries men’s and women’s bags, shoes and accessories.  “We’ve been looking forward to opening a store on the Westside, but just needed the right environment,” said Charles Delapalme, senior vice president of Louis Vuitton’s western region stores. And though it’s just been open two weeks, he says that customers have been gravitating toward the store’s beach-friendly items such as sunglasses and the light gray- and ivory-checked Damier Azure collection that women can carry from the beach to dinner.

  • The beach theme carried right on through to the after-party, which was held at the Annenberg beach house right off PCH. Stylish celebrities such as Kristen Bell, Serena Williams, Dita von Teese, Gabrielle Reese, Rachel Zoe and Eva Amurri (the latter three ladies acted as hosts for the event, which benefited Heal the Bay), mingled around a decadent table of lobster tails and oysters as well as on the house’s back deck that overlooked the ocean. A percussion band dressed in beachy whites jammed outside, illuminated by Louis Vuitton logos projected on the wall behind them.

It was truly a “Vuitton goes to the beach” affair, lavish, upbeat but relaxed California-style and full of the brands’s top fans.
