Feminine and provocative new fragrance from Gucci - Guilty

Gucci Guilty eau de toilette is warm yet striking oriental floral perfume. Top notes of pink pepper, heart note of lilac, base notes of patchouli and amber – all velvet femininity with hint of provocation.

The patchouli that is the hallmark of Gucci fragrances, conveys a message of strength, while the notes of amber suggests deep femininity.

The fragrance will be available from this month in 30, 50 and 75 ml EDT.

The perfume will be promoted with a video and ad campaign, stylistically resembling of the movie “Sin City”. The director is Frank Miller and the one-minute promotion movie is staring actor Chris Evans and singer and Hollywood star Evan Rachel Wood.

The Gucci Guilty video ad will air for the first time during the ceremony of MTV Video Music Awards on September 12.

Frida Gianinni, creative director of Gucci said, “What we have created in Gucci Guilty is something hypnotic.”

Toronto’s first Victoria’s Secret opens in Yorkdale Shopping Centre

Victoria's Secret Angels Erin Heatherton, Adriana Lima and Chanel Iman open the store at Yorkdale Shopping Centre on Wednesday.

Victoria's Secret Angels Erin Heatherton, Adriana Lima and Chanel Iman open the store at Yorkdale Shopping Centre on Wednesday.

Toronto now has a Secret of its own.

Victoria’s Secret, the U.S.-based mega lingerie chain known for its sexy catalogues and nearly naked fashion shows, has finally come to Canada. It opened its first Toronto store Wednesday at Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

Indeed there are no mere models for Victoria’s Secret. All the dirty work such as store openings in barren outposts like Edmonton (where the first store outside the U.S. opened on Aug. 12) or Toronto is done by supermodels rather than dreary company officials.

Brazilian beauty Adriana Lima, at 29 one of the oldest and longest-serving of the Angels, wielded the oversized scissors to cut the hot pink ribbon, flanked by models Erin Heatherton and Chanel Iman, who is so long and lean she was asked if she eats. Yes, often, she said. “Food is so great for energy!”

That none of the three was wearing lingerie we could see came as a slight disappointment. In fact, all three were fully clothed in jeans and t-shirts and Lima even wore a jacket.

They did, however, reveal the secrets under their demure t-shirts.

The slight Chanel Iman was wearing Miraculous, which promises to pump a girl up two full cup sizes.

“It’s the bra my friends and I wear to go to parties,” she said. “It makes the most of something I might not have. Loads of cleavage and loads of bust.”

Lima, meanwhile, is an Incredible girl. The chain’s newest collection is a gravity-defying miracle of engineering that comes, as any Angel will tell you, in three styles, is seamless, “embraces” you rather than digging into your back, and has self-adjusting, hardware-free straps. The whole thing moulds to your body like it belongs there.

But, Victoria’s Secret isn’t only about lingerie. If you want mere underwear and practical support, go to the Bay, conveniently located across the hall from this new bastion to bras and knickers.

No, Victoria’s Secret’s special sauce is sex appeal, or, as all three Angels uttered in almost identical language, “feeling good in your own skin,” “loving your body no matter what shape or size,” and “treating yourself to something a little lovely” to celebrate that body confidence.

The black-walled, chandelier-lit boudoir look comes as a dark and mysterious surprise to those of us weaned on the white and bright Victoria’s Secret stores in many a mall across the border.

While there is a smattering of comfy cotton knickers and proper pyjamas in this shop, you can’t see them from the front. This place is less girl next door and more femme fatale, with boned and glittery corsets and a plethora of bras and panties in leopard prints and black lace.

Sex sells, and maybe confidence does too.

But what becomes an Angel most? Between interviews, booked in 10-minute increments, speed-dating style, Lima was busy scooping up not corsets or demi-cups but rather roomy cotton pyjama bottoms and oversized sweatshirts from the collegiate collection, Pink, tucked in half way to the back of the store. Seems sex is fine, but it’s important to be comfy, even for Angels.

Emmys Fashion: Some Conspicuous Absences

Giorgio Armani and Oscar de la Renta were among the big names represented on the Emmys red carpet tonight, but where were Valentino, Dior and Chanel, to name three labels that actresses typically blurt out?

Maybe the houses are throwing their efforts toward the Oscars and the Golden Globes because the Emmys can be such a mixed bag of style. Personally I liked Anna Paquin’s McQueen dress with gold embroidery on the shoulders but she was panned on NBC’s coverage. And January Jones got knocked for her fan-pleated Versace gown, with its teeny, strange conical bodice. She looked uncomfortable but maybe because the dress was indeed wearing her.

Still, this was not a risk-taking red carpet or a particularly fashionable one. Among the style winners were Lea Michele in taffeta Oscar de la Renta, Claire Danes in bronze beaded Armani Prive, and Julianna Margulies in navy

Plastic bag use falls for fourth year

The number of plastic bags handed out to supermarket shoppers has fallen for the fourth year in a row, according to retail industry figures.

In the year to May 2010 there was a 43% reduction in the number of ‘single-use’ bags given to customers, in comparison to 2006, when independent monitoring began. This represents a fall of 4.6 billion bags.

And the total weight of the material used in the bags has fallen by more than a half, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), of which all seven of the participating supermarkets are members.

Highlighting a more-than-6% increase in sales volumes over this same period, the BRC claimed the figures to be a “ringing endorsement” of a voluntary approach for supermarkets. It argued that they should continue to be allowed to use their own initiatives and the methods “which work best for their own customers”, instead of suffering mandated bans or taxes.

BRC director-general Stephen Robertson said it was a “tremendous achievement” by supermarkets, customers and staff alike. He drew attention to a single-month snapshot figure for May 2009, which showed a reduction of 48% in comparison to 2006 – tantalisingly close to the 50% reduction that supermarkets had set for themselves.

However, a similar snapshot for May 2010 – produced by the Waste and Resources Management Programme (WRAP), which monitors supermarkets’ performance – revealed that the number of single-use bags handed out had risen by 23 million in comparison to the same month in 2009.

Nevertheless, Robertson said that the overall reduction showed that shoppers were “permanently adopting the habit of re-using their bags”.

“The reduction in bag use is great news, but it’s the halving of the total weight of single-use carrier bags which shows retailers really scoring on the crucial issue of reducing environmental impact,” he added.

“Retailers are working hard on a range of other environmental measures, such as reducing food waste, reducing and redesigning packaging, as well as providing customers with recycling information through the on-pack recycling label.”

City officials deem trial run of ban on plastic bags a success

The day without plastic bags was meant to serve as a test run in preparation for a city ordinance that goes into effect Jan. 1. The ordinance will ban distribution of single-use bags at store checkouts.

While city officials deemed Thursday’s trial run a success, a company that represents makers of plastic bags maintained that a survey of residents showed that only 28 percent supported the ordinance.

Even the wording of the measure has come into question the past couple of weeks as city officials and representatives from Duro Bag Manufacturing confer to make sure that paper bags are not included in the ban. Duro Bag — which has a plant in Brownsville — makes paper bags.

But neither the survey nor the wrangling over the language in the ordinance was on the mind of Juana Reyna as she shopped at the H.E.B. supermarket on Boca Chica Boulevard.

“I am stocking up” on reusable bags, Reyna said in Spanish as she carried some of her groceries in plastic bags and some of them in a green, reusable, cloth bag.

“Little by little,” Reyna added in Spanish, noting that she also has started to buy reusable bags at Walmart.

Daniel Garza, director of the H.E.B. store, was unaware of the survey but said customers had been “pretty receptive” to using reusable bags.

“It’s going well,” Garza said. “A lot of customers are asking for information.”

The majority of store personnel wore green T- shirts, highlighting the day’s effort.

But the findings of the American Chemistry Council’s survey could lead to questions about how it is all working.

The Virginia-based trade group — which represents the chemical manufacturing industry, including companies that make plastics — noted that 51 percent of 300 adults surveyed would like the ban repealed or postponed, while 28 percent support the ban. The remaining respondents were undecided.

“This survey demonstrates that the City Commission is out of step with Brownsville voters,” the trade group’s Rudy Underwood said in a statement issued Thursday.
